The benefits of hiring a Carer or Private Nurse at home following discharge from hospital in London

What are the benefits of hiring a carer at home following discharge from hospital?

We put this question and other questions around choosing private care at home to Michele Jogee, Director of Homecare Services and Registered Manager for north London-based HP Homecare. Incapacity or illness can onset without warning. Equally, many clients wish to remain in their own homes and receive private care. Here, Michele explains how her established team of private nurses and carers enables that to happen…

We have been providing tailored and rapid response nursing and personal care to older, vulnerable people in their own homes for over 20 years.

We develop meticulous and transparent care plans that set out the depth of both specialist and incidental care to be administered. Safe administration of medication, meal preparation aligned to lifestyle, exercise support and household chores are clearly documented; in order to reassure and comfort the client, and their family, of how fully needs will be met. After all, it isn’t just a document; it’s about someone’s quality of life…

We often visit clients in local hospitals – private and NHS – prior to discharge, enabling us to liaise with doctors and nurses and continue appropriate care levels at home.

Finally, we understand how daunting inviting someone you initially don’t know well into your home can be. Accordingly, combined with meeting clinical and practical need, we closely observe our clients’ preferred lifestyles and forms of worship. We then carefully assign our private nurses and carers to complement a client’s lifestyle requirements.

Usually amid the sudden onset of illness or shock of a progressive diagnosis where complex specialist nursing and/or end-of-life care is required or typically circumstances where it is necessary to leave hospital or a care facility and return home.

Or a loss of mental capacity caused by varying stages of dementia – an area in which we specialise. Assisting our clients with daily living, our specially trained nurses and carers also facilitate activities that can help to de-escalate progression, by means of reminiscence and memory-evoking exercises.

Our homecare services can also include personal daily care and companionship.

Sensitive, discreet and intuitive. These characteristics are paramount because caring for people in their own homes – often for up to 12 hours a day – is both a responsibility, and a privilege. Overall, they are committed to making life better for the people that they care for.

As a private care company our service inevitably involves fees. Although our clients often commend us on how we approach our terms of engagement and ensure as much information is presented at the start of the relationship so that an informed decision can be made. Our primary focus is on understanding a client’s care needs and lifestyle requirements. Rates are discussed, but they are most definitely secondary.

We care as much for our nurses and carers, as we do our clients. Our established team is well rewarded both financially and in terms of career development. They love what they do, and it shows.

“I first called HP Homecare in a crisis on Christmas Day 2011. Michele took the call and within 24 hours, had visited and set up a care plan for my father. It was not a tick-box process but a carefully designed, bespoke care package and the service is always tailored to reflect changing needs. I am so grateful for all the continuing care over the years…”
